Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration

  • Children's Museum of Pittsburgh 10 Children's Way Pittsburgh, PA, 15212 United States (map)

Celebrate with us as we mark the historic contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and the Civil Rights Movement with programs throughout the day:

King for a Day

11:00 am - 3:00 pm, in the Lobby

Read the speeches of Dr. King at the microphone in the "King for a Day" program hosted by The Saturday Light Brigade Radio Show. All ages are invited to take the podium at this annual event.

Streaming Justice

12:00 pm - 5:00 pm in the Saturday Light Brigade Radio Studio

SLB Radio Productions presents a live 5-hour webcast exploring civil rights accomplishments, challenges, and dreams for the future. Hosted by area teens from throughout the region, Streaming Justice will originate from the SLB Radio studios in the Children's Museum and feature music, conversation, listener phone calls and more, all of which will air live at www.youthexpress.org or via the TuneIn app or the Simple Radio app. For additional information, contact Jon Bindley at jon@slbradio.org

On Freedom Corner

10:00 am - 4:30 pm, in the Art Studio

Freedom Corner, the historic corner of the Centre and Crawford avenues, is a symbol of the home of the Civil Rights Movement in Pittsburgh. Create collages using images from both the Pittsburgh and national movement and write an idea that you would fight for on a picket sign and pose in front of our collage mural.

"I Have A Dream" Colaborative Metal Sculpture

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm, in MAKESHOP

Help our teaching artists create a metal sculpture that pays tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and his famous speech "I Have A Dream". Pick your favorite quote and punch it into metal sheeting, or add texture and shapes to the surface of the sculpture. When it's finished the sculpture will be featured in MAKESHOP until the end of February to celebrate Black History Month.
